Excel-math
John Johnson illustrated how to create procedures using macros in Excel. He also
illustrated a 4x4 magic square and some observations on balance. This came about when Charlie
started on one of Ben Franklin's 16x16 magic squares illustrated at the Ben Franklin institute in
Philadelphia.
JOB SIG
No JOB SIG meeting was held in July, due to vacations. An email was sent to Job
SIG members summarizing a Job SIG member survey. Two members had found jobs since the
job sig started last December.
Server and Networking
The Server and Networking SIG was on vacation in July and vacation
continues in August. In September we will look at Service Pack 1 for Windows Server 2003.
This major update concentrates on making the already fairly secure Win2003 even more secure
by adding many of the features that were found in SP2 for Windows XP. The server update
comes with some additional new tools that make it easier to configure security settings to best fit
the functional role that a particular server plays in a network. We'll also discuss some lessons
learned in my recent upgrade from Exchange Server 5.5 to the 2003 version. Most of this work
was completed during a marathon nine-hour phone conversation with Microsoft support. Our
next meeting will be Thursday, September 8th at 7pm in the DACS Resource Center.
Web Design
The web design SIG has spent the last couple of sessions going over the total
re-design of the DACS web site. We've discussed and reorganized the basic page and folder
structure, and consolidated pages, where possible. We also revamped the "look" and used CSS
and templates to maintain consistence across the site. A new streamlined top and left links bar,
with "fly-outs" will allow the viewer to access all pages at all times.
Using Dreamweaver to do the heavy lifting, we have watched the site unfold. At the Sig meetings
we have constructed and discussed the templates to be used, examining the advantages and
potential pitfalls.
To keep the SIG notes and other regularly changing pages up to date, we plan to eventually
implement "server side includes" allowing the text to be dynamically uploaded. Additional
programming will eventually be implemented, such as a dynamic calendar. These enhancements
will simplify the web masters job - not only in keeping the site up to date, but also maintaining
consistency.
There will be no Web Design SIG in August. Starting September we'll cover the basics again of
building Websites, and a talk on the subject of search engine submissions will be presented
sometime in the fall.
Any suggestions or requests for web design information will be welcomed. The SIGS are for our
members tell us what you'd like to learn about.
Enjoy the summer!
